Slovakia Election Deepfake Audio of Šimečka Spreads 48 Hours Before Vote

A deepfake audio clip impersonating Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka discussing vote rigging spread on Facebook 48 hours before Slovakia's 30 September 2023 parliamentary election.

On 28 September 2023, a 100-second deepfake audio clip began circulating on Facebook and Telegram in which what sounded like Progressive Slovakia party leader Michal Šimečka and journalist Monika Tódová discussed buying votes from the Roma minority. The clip surfaced two days before Slovakia's 30 September parliamentary election. Both Šimečka and Tódová publicly denied the conversation; fact-checkers (AFP, the Slovak Press Agency) identified telltale audio artefacts and Facebook eventually labelled the post as 'manipulated media' — but only after extensive viral spread. Progressive Slovakia narrowly lost to the populist Smer-SD party led by Robert Fico. The incident is widely cited as the first major deepfake interference in a European democratic election and a case study in EU AI Act drafting on synthetic-media labelling.
